Initiating Generative Masculinity - The Green Knight

The first in a series of events through 2026 promoting the work of The Helios Fellowship as we move towards the gathering in September.

An Introduction to the Masculine Psyche through Initiatory Myth, Symbol & Archetype

Are You Ready?

Join me online to explore the contemporary relevance of a winter solstice story from the stable of the Arthurian Grail Legends - Sir Gawain & The Green Knight.

Widely considered the oldest and finest Grail Romance, it illuminates the heart of the challenges we face today - all in some way symptomatic of societies failure to provide adequate initiatory rites of passage for the masculine psyche; primarily nurturing the psycho-spiritual adolescent boys.

The tale first emerged as a poem in the 14th Century - the moment in history when Pagan and Christian mythologies were battling for the spiritual heartlands of Europe; when the folklore and culture of animism and the dogma of monotheism clashed with devastating consequences - mirroring the rupture between the archetypal masculine and feminine, which paved the way for the evil persecution of witches and folk healers in the 15th & 16th centuries.

Although the original author remains unknown, this powerful story continues to resonate in ways that very much affect our lives today.

Yet, as with any generative myth, if we care to look, it reveals to us the archetypal patterns woven into the deep structure of both our personal and collective experience, allowing us to discern the less obvious forces in play; the ones that influence our motivations, beliefs and values as we create and inhabit the various narratives across the arc of our lives.

The Last thing this story is about is a man having his head cut off…it’s not really a story about a man at all.

Equally relevant to men and women, The Green Knight will be of particular interest to those seeking to appreciate and understand the deeper, systemic (archetypal) issues assailing the world - our deep and pervasive split from nature, endemic violence, fundamentalism, and social polarisation and fragmentation for example, whilst granting helpful insight into what we might do personally and collectively to meet these existential challenges.

With diligence, intention and a little skill we are able to reclaim some of this stories generative wisdom and embody it in our own lives.

Barry Keoghan, Dev Patel, Kate Dickie, and Sean Harris render David Lowery’s 2021 telling of this initiatory rite of passage firmly in a realm of its own.
